GLOBAL WARMING - TELL THAT TO LOS ANGELES

In case you don't recognize the skyline pictured above it is Los Angeles, California. And in case you don't recognize what is in the background that is SNOW. Yes it snowed in Los Angeles. This is not only rare but highly unusual for the Los Angeles basin. The resulting snow and unusually cold temperatures are the result of an extremely strong El Nino' that has parked itself in the Pacific off of South America and brought with it record setting warmth in the Northeast, Central and Southeast portions of the country and record setting cold to places like California especially Southern California and massive snow fall amounts in places like Denver, Colorado and the states of Oklahoma and Texas with ice in Southern Texas which again is highly unusual. So what happened to Mr. Gore and his Global Warming ? Well let's just say that once again our wonderful planet is showing that climatologicl changes take place as a normal happenstance which bring with it extremes that once again proves that changes whether hot or cold are a normal and natural occurrence in our planets process of existence.

I do wonder one thing. Over the last two years whenever Global Warming fear master Al Gore has delivered a major speech or presentation concerning his fantasies about man made warming that particular location was either experiencing the coldest day on record or at least one of the top five coldest on record. Was he speaking by chance in Los Angeles yesterday and is HE directly responsible for Global Cooling ? Anyone that has heard his slow monotonic vocal delivery can certainly understand how cooling could occur!

Hi Ken,
Your not to bright are you? "the result of an extremely strong El Nino" An extremely strong El Nino is the result of global warming. Temperatures in one spot at one time mean nothing, it is the global averages that tell the tale. Too bad your not smart enough to see the big picture beyond your conservative agenda. We are so glad the rest of the USA and the world now see through the conservative lies. Crawl back under your rock please!

Anonymouse: Not too bright yourself are you? You're just another of those pre-programmed environmental nazis that wouldn't know global warming from one of your own farts.

I'd love to hear about your qualifications in the environmental or climate science field.

El Nino is just another cylical phenomenon, like the occasional warming and cooling the earth has undergone throughout it's life span.

Your peurile, small minded insults are the surest sign of how poorly you are equipped to understand this complex phenomenon, let alone discuss it with any rational mature perspective.

Climb back under that rock you fool!

Poor Mikey,

And your degrees that help you understand the science behind global climate influences are? Oh, that’s right you have no science degrees.

"2006 Hottest Year on Record
Last year was the warmest in the continental United States in the past 112 years — capping a nine-year warming streak "unprecedented in the historical record" that was driven in part by the burning of fossil fuels, the government's National Climatic Data Center reported yesterday. The center said there are indications that the rate at which global temperatures are rising is speeding up. "

Oh no, real science and scientists might be telling us something.

And you asked about my qualifications:
Bull Shit in Biology
Piled Higher and Deeper in Biological Engineering

Now did you ever finish that masters you said you started? I think I hear your brothers calling from the cave. Better hurry back with your Neanderthal friends, the conservative extinction has all ready started. We are so glad to see “W” and the rest of his friends are a dieing breed. Exellent arguements Mike. So I will not add to your EPA expertise. Thanks!

Incidentally Mike was appointed to the EPA by George HW Bush so he DOES know what he is talking about.

Sad, you both seem to mistake a political appointment for knowledge. We must all know George Deutsch over at NOAA. He had about the same qualifications as you did for the job at the EPA. You are so dense you don’t get it that real scientist’s laugh at the political cronies that get appointed to these agencies. In general you don’t have the background, intelligence or skills to do real science. Your jobs are to promote the administrations view point.

Am I a liberal? No. A scientist seeks the truth in all things. The truth is what matters, not a political leaning one way or the other. We just get tired of bloggers like you who start with an agenda then use selective data and reasoning to back that up.

A great example of this approach was Ken’s blog from January 4th.
110TH CONGRESS, FIRST 100 HOURS - THE BEGINNING OF THE DEMOCRAT DECEPTION

3. Ending oil company subsides – liberal

Most conservatives I know would say that giving subsides are a liberal action. That market forces should be allowed to work and balance the system. Yet to support your viewpoint that all the democratic proposals were liberal you stated that “ending subsides” is a liberal thing.

I understand you both have you viewpoint set that liberals are bad and conservatives are good, but it the real world most of us think there are good and bad in both and wish you would focus more on truth rather than fiction to support your viewpoint.

Until I see scientific evidence to support the claims of supposed ManMade "Global Warming" I will continue to believe that the left believes this to be thier "Pet Project" and will dump MY MONEY down the tubes to pay for this research none of which will prove anything except what we have known all along, that the earth cleanses itself every few thousand years or so and is in the process of doing that now!

Marie: I'm not bothered by his "scientific qualifications." A biologist who plays with frogs is hardly an expert on global warming.

Anonymouse provides us with yet another illustration of the complete lack of intellectual integrity so commonly displayed by environmental fascists who will say or do anything to discredit anyone who dares to disagree with their radical plans to restructure Western economies based on forecasts that have already been shown to be wildly inaccurate.

Science can't predict the weather with certainty beyond a few days. Yet THIS crowd of lefties demands we follow their risky and expensive scheme (with a good dose of socialism tossed in) based on forecasts of what MIGHT happen in 10, 20 or 30 years.

Never mind that all their previous forecasts of imminent doom over the last 30 years have proven false. Somehow THIS time they are right?

wow ya'll sure do stick to your ideology don't you?
I wonder if you think it is worth developing alternative sources of energy, even if Global Climate Change is a construct of liberal socialist/communist/hippy obfuscation?
Can't you accept that what we are currently doing is un-sustainable? Don't you think that even if it is fake, lies etc... that it would be a good thing for Americans (not corporate America) to have a new way to exist on the planet without the carbon emmissions from petroleum?
Isn't it a good idea to stop funding the Islamic governments with oil revenue? We could tell Chavez to keep his oil. We would regain an edge in industry, manufacturing, local service economy, and just maybe reduce the threat of (or non-threat as you would have us believe) global climate change.
Also on a side note, climate change is occuring. Tempratures are increasing on average dramatically in the last decade. Science isn't at all vauge about that. The disagreement is what the cause is. So don;t discredit your argument by pretending that the temprature is NOT going up. Snow in places that have not had it for decades is a sign of change.
Can you stop trying to prove that you are the only credible source for this and start looking at the big picture?

You might find more areas of agreement if you didn't instantly look for disagreement.

WHO??? Name one commenter here who says we should NOT look for alternative soruces of energy???

Name one Treehugger! Just one!

Oh, and name one person commenting here, or in the entire Republican Party, who thinks that sending such a huge proportion of our energy dollars over to the Middle East is a good idea?

Name one Treehugger! Just one!

And please, name just ONE person who thinks climate change is not occurring.

Name one Treehugger! Just one!

And since WE ARE looking at the big picture, and not simply viewing environmental, energy and economically and socially related issues from the narrow prism of socialist ideology, we can all see the need to 1. decrease dependence on foreign oil by taking advantage of available U.S. petroleum reserves which are known to exist and which can be recovered without any danger to the environment:

See this map for help:

http://photos1.blogger.com/hello/249/2318/1024/oilreserves.jpg

In the space of ten years we could stop all imports of oil from every country but Canada and still meet our energy needs.

The additional revenue expanded US energy recovery would generate could pay for a "Manhatten Project" to create technology necessary for an oil free future in 2020. We could then sell that technology to the developing world and gain enough profit to immunize, clothe, teach and feed every child on the planet.

Take your lips off the tree trunk and let the sap flow!

Hi Mike,
And please, name just ONE person who thinks climate change is not occurring.
Ken Taylor for one. He put up this post. Are you actually trying to tell me that the post was not commentary on the myth of global warming? When I read it it seemd to me that the post was calling snowfall in L.A. an example of how the climate isn't getting warmer. If that was not the gist then the post was poorly designed and created a false impression.
As to your cry for me to "name just one" example of every point I made, you seemd to be telling me that every principal I was promoting was one which conservatives agreed with. Now how about that!?
Where a divergence occurs is when you myopically call for more oil drilling. I think we should move AWAY from oil. Even W sez that. I don't think he really wants Americans to use less oil. He just has to say that.
More oil just makes more oil companies rich. America needs energy independance from corporate influence. America needs to move away from massive single point of failure plants and create micro generation on a massive scale. That is ingenuity. That is the American way. Get out of your ideology and stop treating people like they are children or worse, just plain stupid.
Take your lips off the tailpipe!

OK Treehugger... I see you decided NOT to take advantage of the advice of one more experienced than you.

Obviously, you aren't here to try and establish a dialogue, or even explain your point of view.

Your goal is to make totally assinine and false statements that you unfortunately believe to be true and dare anyone to prove them false.

Well, I'm sorry, but it is JUST TOO EASY.

You say Ken denies the reality of climate change and suggest his post as proof, so please allow me to quote from that post:

"Well let's just say that once again our wonderful planet is showing that climatologicl changes take place as a normal happenstance which bring with it extremes that once again proves that changes whether hot or cold are a normal and natural occurrence in our planets process of existence.

Ken said NOTHING about manmade global warming.

Unfortunately, you extremists fail to understand the concept Ken so clearly illustrated. Any manmade global warming is insignificant and nothing man could do would change the climatic processes that are part of this planet's natural course.

I would be happy to recommend further research and reading opportunities for you, but I have the inkling that you have already filled what mind you have to the limit of it's capacity with all the left wing tripe to come down the pike.

Everything I said was based on my opinion. It was my opinion that the post I commented on made light of global climate change. It made fun of man's and industry's contribution to the warming of the planet rapidly over the last decade.

Where is the lie?

Look I know you're mad because you're stuck in some mind numbing assinine life that just makes you hate everyone. Sorry about that, but try to get past that. Breathe deeply and slowly. Read your Bible, especially the parts where Jesus is talking. That oughta calm you down enough to be able to listen to an opposing viewpoint without resorting to that knee-jerk conservative reaction you are manifesting.

Vern1966, thank you for your insightful take on this.

I'm sorry...but that seriously made me "lol".

Folks, the UN study on the subject of specifically how humans have contributed to global warming

How about this from the UN:

The Independent reported Sunday that a new U.N. report found that livestock is responsible for 18 percent of global greenhouse gases. In other words, in the universe of global-warming alarmism, cow gas does more damage to Mother Earth than SUVs. (American cars are responsible for some 6 percent of greenhouse gases.)

The Sunday Telegraph reported that the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is downgrading its predictions as to how much sea levels will rise due to global warming. The IPCC lowered its upper estimate for sea-level rise by 2100 from 34 inches to 17 inches.

Also from the article:

As vice president, Gore blasted Singer for receiving money from corporate interests. Singer responded by noting that many environmentalists -- and let me add, Gore, who perfected White House fund raising -- have taken money from Big Energy, as well.

Funny how climatologists have their motives impuned when they are skeptics; but somehow the alarmists have pure motives and their funding never questioned.

Book of interest for the alarmists.

Scientific scaremongering like this is nothing new. Yet people keep falling for it over and over and over again.

Wordsmith: Don't you find it amusing that when it is too hot, the scaremonger shout "global warming."

When it's too cold, the scaremongers shout "global warming."

When hurricanes are plentiful, the scaremongers shout "global warming"

When hurricanes are altogether absent they don't say a word and hope no one notices.

They've managed to convince THEMSELVES, no one else, that whatever happens in our climate, it's because of global warming. As if weather never existed before Al Gore wrote "Earth in the Balance" ( I went to his booksigning in DC years ago by the way).

What they consistently fail to understand and vehemently deny is that MANMADE global warming is so minimal as to have no effect on the process of climate change.

Skye found this chart which shows the sources of global warming and the manmade component of each:

Why don't you admit that all you did was look at the name "liberaltreehugger" and immediately write me off as a "nit-wit" and "ignorant"? For all you know I am a climate scientist with papers and a solid reputation in the scientific community. All I said was that I global climate change is real, the earth is getting warmer, and that incidents like snofall in strange places is an indication of just that change. Where is the lie?

Skye I don't think that nuclear enegery is a good solution. I think that we have enough trouble with by-products from conventional energy. I think we need to change the whole paradigm of power generation. Stop setting up massive plants that have to then disribute thousands of miles away the power they generate. I think we need to have micro generation at the local level to supplement the existing plants, diffuse the vulnerability from the loss of a single plant and create a new type of local distribution. This isn't "pie-in-the-sky" but there are a lot of details that will need to be worked out. We can do it though. We would be better as a nation if we did

PARIS (Reuters) - The U.N. climate panel agreed its strongest warning yet on Thursday that human activities are causing global warming that may bring more droughts, heatwaves and rising seas, delegates said.

The report, due for formal release on Friday and bolstering conclusions from a 2001 study, may put pressure on governments and companies to do more to curb greenhouse gases mainly from burning fossil fuels in power plants, factories and cars.

Scientists and government officials in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the most authoritative group on global warming, agreed it was "very likely" that human activities were the main cause of warming in the past 50 years, delegates said.

In IPCC language, "very likely" means at least 90 percent probability and is the strongest link to human activities since the IPCC was set up in 1988. The previous study in 2001 said a link was "likely," or 66 percent probable.

"The phrase 'very likely' was approved," said one delegate at the talks, who like others asked not to be named. IPCC officials declined comment, saying that the report would be released on Friday at 0830 GMT.

The IPCC, grouping 2,500 scientists from 130 countries, is also set to say that oceans will keep rising for more than 1,000 years even if governments stabilize greenhouse gas emissions.

The report is the first of four this year by the panel that will outline threats of warming.

The Paris study, looking at the science of global warming, will also project a "best estimate" that temperatures will rise by 3 Celsius (5.4 Fahrenheit) by 2100 over pre-industrial levels, the biggest change in a century for thousands of years.

MORE RAIN, LESS ICE

It says bigger gains, of up to 6.3C in one model, cannot be ruled out but do not fit well with other data. The world is now about 5C warmer than during the last Ice Age.

The draft projects that Arctic ice will shrink, and perhaps disappear in summers by 2100, while heatwaves and downpours would get more frequent. The numbers of tropical hurricanes and typhoons might decrease but the storms would become stronger.

The Gulf Stream bringing warm waters to the North Atlantic could slow, although a shutdown is highly unlikely, it says.

And sea levels are likely to rise by between 28 and 43 cm (11-17 inches) this century, a lower range than forecast in 2001. Rising seas threaten low-lying Pacific islands and low-lying coastal nations from Bangladesh to the Netherlands.

"Governments planning coastal defenses have to live with large uncertainties for now, and quite some time in future," said Stefan Rahmstorf of Germany's Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research.

Rahmstorf wrote a report last year saying that observations of past changes indicated a bigger rise by 2100, of 50-140 cm.

The Eiffel Tower in Paris, near where the IPCC experts were meeting, was to shut off its famous night-time illuminations for five minutes on Thursday night to draw attention to energy use.

U.N. officials hope the IPCC report will spur stalled talks on expanding the fight against global warming.

Thirty five industrial nations aim to cut emissions of greenhouse gases to five percent below 1990 levels by 2008-12 under the U.N.'s Kyoto Protocol and want outsiders such as the United States, China and India to do more.

Last week
President George W. Bush said climate change was a "serious challenge." But he has stopped short of capping emissions despite pressure from Democrats who control both houses of Congress -- arguing Kyoto would damage the economy.

I know I am late to comment on this one, but after seeing the ads on the Discovery channel for the "Global Cooling" project, where they try to raise global temperatures, I feel the need to comment. Yes, the Earth is warming, but we also just came out of the little ice age. The Earth has been going through these warming-cooling cycles for millenia. It is natural. If we screw around with trying to cool the Earth, it could throw off the cycle and send us into an Ice Age the likes of which has not been seen here since the Earth was a giant iceball before life even started to sprout on Earth.
About CO2 levels causing the warming of earth? Yes, they go up with temperature, but the relationship is backwards from what Global Warming Experts claim. CO2 levels go up after temperatures rise (http://bp2.blogger.com/_ir3ue4QiIh0/RgM5Jc403vI/AAAAAAAAAB0/-1oTAtAfyMQ/s1600-h/IceCores1.JPG).
